Place at least 10 feet from kitchen/stove, and on the ceiling or high on a wall, no more than 10 inches from top.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Carbon monoxide alarms can be placed anywhere, not just the ceiling or high on a wall. They should be replaced every 5 to 7 years.

Fire Extinguishers

Keep in the kitchen and garage, but make sure to have the right grade for the type of fire that might occur.

Escape Ladders

Have at least one if your home has more than one story. Each room needs 2 escape routes; in most bedrooms it's the window, so have a ladder nearby.

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by 50%, and that's important because a home fire starts every 83 seconds! The faster you know about a fire, the faster you can start moving your family outside. The First Alert smoke alarm with silence button allows you to both silence a non-threatening alarm and to test the unit's functionality. It features a low battery alert to remind you when to change the battery and has a missing battery guard to ensure that a battery is placed inside the alarm. The side battery drawer slides open for easy battery replacement. A blinking power indicator on the unit confirms that it is receiving power. The alarm contains an optional pin to lock the battery and unit in place for tamper resistance. It can be mounted on either the ceiling or the wall and can be used in mobile homes and RVs. It includes one 9-volt battery and has a 10-year limited warranty. UL listed for safety.Bree Norlander: what's in the Box: One smoke alarm, user's manual, and one 9-volt battery

Customers are mixed about the false alarm of the gas smoke fire alarm. Some mention that the alarm works on this smoke detector, but the light on it stopped working right after they purchased it. They like the idea that they use both technologies to detect smoke and fire (ionization and photoelectric), and that it's a good, basic smoke detector. Good option to add dual sensor battery powered (ten year sealed) unit to single sensor wired alarms

Good option to add dual sensor battery powered (ten year sealed) unit to single sensor wired alarms
I liked the ability to add a dual sensor alarm to augment our hard-wired single sensor alarms. I replaced an older First Alert battery powered alarm and was able to use the same mounting screws, although the alarm itself isn't quite vertical. On the other hand, there was an issue with placing the alarm on the mounting ring. I attached the alarm to the ring before mounting the ring on the wall, (which activated the battery) and then found I couldn't remove the alarm from the ring when I rotated the alarm count-clockwise. What I found was that the "activation key" (see X in the photo) protruded enough to block the alarm from rotating completely to the removal position. I used a screwdriver to push the "key" inwards enough to allow the alarm to rotate to the removal position. The key in fact pushes the batter switch to the "on" position (see Y in the photo). I ended up putting enough pressure on the activation key to the point where it no longer affected placing or removing the alarm. I recall seeing another review that mentioned the same problem. Perhaps most of the time the activation key switch doesn't protrude into the mounting ring guide upon initializing the battery, but if it does, this was my workaround. YMMV.
